Introduction to General Gynaecology

The General Gynaecology Division provides secondary and tertiary gynaecological service. We receive referrals from all over the Special Administrative Region. We provide a comprehensive range of treatment for various conditions so that more choices can be offered. When surgical treatment is indicated, the least traumatic approach will be chosen. For example, we consider removing the uterus vaginally which is more preferable to even laparoscopic surgery. To minimize the disruption to patients' daily life, we provide day surgery to suitable patients. Other patients will usually be admitted in the morning of the operating day. Patients with early pregnancy complications can be seen in our Early Pregnancy Assessment Clinic to avoid hospital admission. General Gynaecology Clinics are run three times a week. The service is supported by subspecialists like gynaecological oncologists, reproductive medicine subspecialists in the department. Other specialists in Queen Mary Hospital and in the University of Hong Kong are also involved as appropriate. The Division is involved in the teaching and training of medical students and house officers. We are playing a key role in the training of postgraduates towards attainment of specialist status. There are also ongoing clinical research activities in the Division.

Urogynaecology

Introduction to Urogynaecology

The urogynaecology clinic was established in our Department since March 1998. Women with lower urinary tract symptoms including urinary incontinence can be referred to this clinic for assessment. Moreover, women with the main complaint of pelvic organ prolapse with or without urinary tract symptoms can also be referred.

The clinic is run in the afternoon on Wednesday at the outpatient department in Queen Mary Hospital. For women requiring urodynamic study, this will be performed in our urodynamic investigation room located in Queen Mary Hospital. We have dedicated and trained nurses to perform the procedure. Management of pelvic floor disorders will be discussed with the woman after assessment. Non-surgical treatments are encouraged and supported in appropriate patients. An experienced physiotherapist is available at Tsan Yuk Hospital for teaching pelvic floor exercise and bladder training. There are also well-trained nurses who will provide advice on lifestyle modification, training of the pelvic floor and management of ring pessary to patients who adopt conservative approach to the conditions. Surgery for management of stress urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse will be discussed and offered if this form of treatment is indicated. Multidisciplinary approach is also adopted in complicated case in which urologist and colorectal surgeon are involved where appropriate in formulating a treatment plan after regular multidisciplinary meeting.

Apart from patients with urinary problems and pelvic organ prolapse, we also take care of patients who suffered from severe perineal tear during delivery and provide advice to this group of patients after thorough assessment.
